Guidance for Dentists

The Board in general shadows the UK’s General Dental Council (GDC) in matters of ethical policy and adopts its published guidance as its own framework of professional guidelines for registered dental practitioners registered with it.

The Board however retains the right to modify or rewrite its professional guidance to suit local circumstances.

Where there is a variance, this will be made explicit and published in this website.

The Board has adopted the General Dental Council’s guidelines Standards for Dental Professionals (May 2005) as its own code for registered dental practitioners.

The General Dental Council’s current professional guidance may be obtained from its website. You will require:

• Part II, Section 8. (1) (a) and (b) of the Medical Act:

Registration of Dentists and Pharmacists

8.(1) Any person who satisfies the Board that s(he) is of good character and-

(a) Is registered in the register established by the General Dental Council (GDC) or the register of Pharmaceutical Chemists of the United Kingdom under or persuant to any law for the time being in force in the United Kingdom; or

(b) Is in possession of such Commonwealth or foreign diploma in dentistry or pharmacy and has such professional experience as would entitle him(er) to be so registered in either of those registers;

Shall on payment of such fee as may be prescribed be entitled to be registered in the appropriate part of the register.

If you do not satisfy the criteria as stated within, then you will need to successfully complete the UK GDC’s Overseas Registration Examinations before being eligible to work as a dentist in Gibraltar.
